UX trends are constantly evolving. User Experience is a vast field, which needs constant reading and learning to stay up to date with. It is one of those fields that is always changing. Since UX/UI design is dependent on the customer’s needs, it is constantly changing. We can already see that User Experience today is very different from the UX of a few years ago. Larger corporates are relying more on data and analysis to guide their interaction design. With the proliferation of wearables, virtual reality, augmented reality and the Internet of Things, the skills UX designers need today are vastly different. Particularly with the Internet of Things, where devices ranging from fridges to buildings are not only online but also communicating with each other to make user’s lives easier. Websites need to be constantly updated and tweaked regularly in order to meet customer’s complex and specific requirements. With exciting new tools and new technology at our fingertips, there’s a lot to keep on top of. From books, to UX blogs and even podcasts you can now listen to, there’s a huge amount of knowledge out there. With just a little bit of dedication, you can always find ways to keep learning, find out the latest UX news and know what’s happening in the field of UI/UX design.

  • Start asking questions on platforms like Quora and Reddit where you can connect with influencers and learn about future developments. 
  • Sign up or register with trend tracking websites such as Trend Watching to keep an eye on emerging ideas and technologies.
  • Keep checking websites that write about the evolution of design such as UI Movement which is a great resource for design or UXPin which has a huge library of ebooks.

Get involved in the design community

The UX community is friendly and loves to share information with fellow designers. If there are online or even offline meet-ups in the city you live in, you can try and attend one of them. These are invaluable as they bring the community together to share ideas and network. There are also some groups on LinkedIn where you can join and participate in the conversations. You can also start new discussion threads on these groups to start a new topic of conversation. Listen to useful talks, learn about industry news and UX design trends and discuss everything with fellow UX enthusiasts. There are also industry events that you can track and attend if feasible.

Identify thought leaders in the field and start following them on social media

Get on Twitter and start following UX thought leaders who constantly share information on a range of UX topics. There are many who comment on the latest trends in UI/UX such as Andy Budd, Aarron Walter and Jared Spool who are known as the who’s who of UX design. They often share content about new innovation and design while also engaging in conversations about future trends. There are several blog posts and lists that mention industry leaders you need to be following on Twitter.

One of the best ways to stay in the loop is to check UX news sites which post about the latest trends and hot topics. Sites like UX Magazine and UX Matters are great for this. Google also posts regular updates on their blog, some of which are user experience related and contain useful tips and hints on where the industry is heading.

While its great to stay updated about industry trends and insights, but the best place to get insights about your audience is via your website. Check your site analytics regularly to see what’s working and what’s not. Carry out regular A/B testing to see how your audiences are responding to different updates and additions to your site.

Set up a Google alert for UX news or some specific keywords like “UI/UX Design Trends of 2022” and Google will send you news updates directly to your inbox as and when they’re posted.

Take the first step to staying up to date with everything that is happening in the field of UX by getting involved with Hackathons and other UX community events where you can learn new skills. There is a lot of information available out there so just make the effort to read the latest blogs and news updates that people are writing about.
